Public Works Department Mizoram is the premier agency of the government of Mizoram engaged in planning, designing, construction and maintenance of Government assets in the field of built environment and infrastructure development.

- Assets in built environment include Hospitals, Schools, Colleges,   Technical Institutes, Police Buildings, Prisons, Courts etc;

 PWD Mizoram also sustains and preserves these assets through a well developed system of maintenance which includes amongst others specialized services like rehabilitation works, roads signage and aesthetic treatments like interiors, landscaping etc.

 PWD Mizoram carries out its activities of assets creation on the basis of the needs and requirement decided by the Govt. of Mizoram and as assessed & appreciated by the PWD through its in house technical expertise.

 The governing principle behind the our sphere of activities is to ensure that the asset is durable, functionally efficient , serves the intended purpose, is created within the reasonable time period, is in conformity with the declared policies of the Government, and would satisfy the user, the government and the public at large.

History of PWD:Further, since PWD is one of the largest and the most important departments within the state of Mizoram, it is a must to keep record on the history of this department in writings. In the year 1972, when Mizoram became a UT, Mizoram PWD had only one Circle which was looked after by an SE. Under this Circle, there were 3 Divisions such as, Aizawl West Division, Aizawl East Division and Lunglei Division where these divisions were further divided into 9 sub-divisions. The first PWD Minister in Mizoram was Mr.Ch.Chhunga who was in fact the first Chief Minister of the State. In 1973, new Divisions like Saiha and Aizawl West Road Division were opened. In the same year, Aizawl West Division was converted to Building Division. After these two divisions, 17 Sub-divisions were again opened. So, in 1973, PWD Mizoram could maintain 6 Divisions and 26 Sub-Divisions.

After Mizoram became a State, PWD continuously grew slowly and since with evolving of Graduate Engineers among the Mizos, those who worked on deputation from CPWD and BRO could go back to their own stations even though some stayed.
